Bridgend - 2

A very young Abergavenny side captained by its ‘now famous’ umpire Darren Lock travelled to Bridgend on a very thundery looking afternoon, with flood lights casting dark shadows across the turf.

Abergavenny struck first with Seth Butler finding the Abergavenny net courtesy of a routine and trademark cross from Elis Mostyn.

Dan Cross and Alex Kennet defended a counter from Bridgend after an accurate through ball found its way down the Bridgend wing. Dan Cross forced the issue nicely and channelled the attacker straight into the robust stick of Alex Kennet who used his strength to make a well timed block tackle.

Tony Clements organised the back four well and set up several attacking phases of play, one such move allowed Abergavenny to retain the ball for at least nine passes before enabling Elis Mostyn to net the second goal of the game.

Tom Lane looked ever lively in this fixture and after periods of very little involvement proved his usual reliable self in sliding out early to prevent another Bridgend effort from beating him on the base line.

Good passing contributions from Chris Taylor, Darren Lock and Ben Griffiths ensured that the Abergavenny threat persisted and a further three goals were scored before the half time interval, (Will Cleaton, Taliesin Martin and Elis Mostyn with the goals).

Bridgend were no walkover and came firing back just before the half time whistle with two goals of their own in quick succession.

The game was definitely a tale of two halves with the Bridgend side making several aggressive attacks, forcing the Abergavenny defence to spring into action. Some clever defending, by Dan Cross in particular, kept the home team at bay but not without a very committed goal line clearance from Seth Butler. Seth dribbled the ball out of contact before being taken out inside his own ‘D’ following his successful ‘body on the line’ effort.

There were just two goals in the second half. Darren Lock netted his first and Chris Taylor struck the second neatly into the opposition backboard, as Aber headed home with a 7-2 victory.
