Abergavenny Youth Netball U13s recently fielded two teams in the South East Wales league and came out smiling.
The newly formed ‘B’ team triumphed over Ystrad followed by a 7-6 win over Newbridge. However wings were slightly clipped with a defeat against Gilfach. For many this was their first venture into competitive league netball so their commitment, skill and determination did themselves and the club proud.
Outstanding player awards went to Evie Atkins for her excellent shooting and skill down court, Elina Lewis for complete flexibility and teamwork and Sophie Watkins for sheer grit and defensiveness.
The ‘A’ team followed later in the day facing a much harder draw.
The day started well with an easy win over Pengam, 13-3, but this was followed by much harder and competitive matches. Newport ‘A’ gave them something to think about and the match ended in 8-8 draw. However the day ended on a big defeat by a mighty Pontypool ‘A’.
The team player award went to Hermione Holder for her skill, effort and for excellent feeds into the circle.
The U15s played the weekend before U13’s and showed great determination against all of their opposition. The ‘B’ team had some hard games against some aggressive opposition but showed excellent team play and didn’t give up. The ‘A’ team showed there talent and won both their games. Players of the tournament were awarded to Bethan Townsend for the ‘A’ team. Hermione Holder who made her debut for the U15 ‘B’ team got team player award alongside Rosie Kimble.
