Darts legend and General of the oche, Raymond van Barneveld was throwing the treble 20s and doing what he does best at Abergavenny’s Labour Club last Thursday.

The flying Dutchman renowned for having one of the silkiest and smoothest throws in the world of darts arrived at the club at 6pm and stayed until almost the witching hour.

Introduced as five-times World Champion and strutting on to his signature tune, ‘Eye of the Tiger’, Barney walked out into a full house heaving with darts fans eager to watch the ice man hit the 60s and deliver the goods.

And although there was no nine-dart finishes, the natural left-hander who throws the arrows with his right hand didn’t disappoint the ‘Barney army.’

Playing 20 legs against the gathered assembled, the maestro remained undefeated until the end of the night, but then up stepped local lads Craig Gilchrist and Andrew Hulbert, to topple the legend and spoil Barney’s clean sheet by winning a leg apiece.

Event organizer Steve Skinner told the Chronicle, “It was a great night of darts and Barney certainly lived up to his reputation as a very driven and competitive player.

“As soon as he arrived at the club he took his jacket off and went off to practice. During the legs he made everything look effortless and proved beyond doubt what a cool customer he really is.”
