Blaenavon RFC - 7
Champagnat RFC - 32
IN their encounter with a touring Champagnat side from Argentina, Blaenavon were left on the receiving end of a bit of a mauling, albeit a very friendly one.
Players from other clubs answered Blaenavon's call and helped the team from up top out against the Champagnat team which plays at a higher level in Argentina.
The Argentinean tourists were first to score with two tries in the first quarter.
The three Davies brothers in the Blaenavon back positions all had a good game, and Blaenavon won quality possession in the line-outs through Paul Jones and Andrew Trumper.
Props Lee Baker and Lewis John should also receive a mention for their quality scrummaging.
Blaenavon finally registered on the scoreboard when they scored a pushover try after 20 minutes and outside half Clayton Gullis kicked the conversion from the touchline.
After half an hour Josh Faletau replaced Lewis John in the front row.
Lee Baker switched to the other side of the scrum and the ball was controlled well by number eight Steve Howard for scrum half Lloyd Parker.
The Blaenavon backs played attacking rugby throughout the match with good
handling and kicking but couldn't prevent Champagnat scoring two more tries before the interval.
At half time the Blaenavon coaches rang the changes and Pat Daley, Matthew Davies and Scott Lewis all got some game time.
However, disaster struck, when early in the second half the referee issued a yellow card to Pat Daley.
After 30 minutes Callum Langley replaced Paul Jones, but nothing could prevent Champagnat's pace and power earning them two more tries before the ref blew his final whistle.
Back in the clubhouse the Champagnat squad showed their appreciation for the large buffet which was laid on by the club's dedicated catering team of Anne and Malcolm Edmunds.
