YOUNG Owain Roberts roared with delight as he crossed the line in front of the field in Abergavenny town centre to take the first of the Get Connected Welsh Open Criterium Youth Races on Friday night.

In front of an excellent crowd, Roberts, of Towy Riders, came sprinting down Nevill Street in the final straight of the ten minute competition to clinch the gold medal.

He finished two bike lengths in front of Kieran Morris, of Mid Shropshire Wheelers, as the Under-eights and under-10s took to the circuit.

There was a great effort from Elynor Backstedt, of Maindy Flyers, who is the daughter of Tour de France star Magnus Backsted. Ellie Shaw was second in the Under-10 girls.

In the under-12s race, Welsh cyclo-cross champion Tom Owens roared to the line after leading from the front right from the word go.

The Mid Shropshire Wheelers ace finished a huge 42 seconds ahead of a group of three who fought for second place.

The under-14s was won by Brynea CC's Joe Holt and the under-16 race was only decided on the line when Zachery May, of Cardiff Jif, won the sprint down Nevill Street ahead of Danny Fox, from Solihull CC.
