WITH rain threatening play, the 2011 Abergavenny girls' cricket tournament sprung into action on Friday evening under overcast skies.

It was the first time the South East Wales Lady Taverners U11 club competition final was held at Avenue Road and attracted teams throughout the region.

Girls' cricket is a relatively new addition to Abergavenny CC's extensive youth section, and the squad have only been training for two years.

Newport, Abercarn and Blaenau Gwent travelled through drizzle, and heavier downpours, to attend the evening's action, which saw each team playing at least three games.

With a wide range of age-levels amongst the players, the younger recruits were able to experience the challenge of competing against more adept and experienced cricketers.

Ultimately, Newport proved the victors in a fun-filled evening and what will hopefully be the first of many girls' cricket tournaments at Avenue Road.
