Goytre - 2

Pontyclun - 2

GOYTRE shot themselves in the foot in the most dramatic of fashions when they conceded two goals to Pontyclun in injury time and threw away what should have been an unassailable lead and replaced it with a paltry draw.

Firing on all cylinders, Goyte took the lead after 20 minutes through their top goal-scorer and the ever prolific Graham Mason, who was given acres of space 12 yards out and his sweetly struck shot gave the visiting keeper no chance.

Further chances fell like confetti for Mason and his striker-in-arms 'Jock' Houston as Goytre dominated and took an iron grip on proceedings. However, try as they might to open up the scoring, the Pontyclun defence remained resolute.

The second-half started in the same vein as the first, with Goytre throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the visitors, and it was no surprise when Mason found the back of the net for his brace and Goytre's second.

Two goals up and with seemingly no clear and present danger coming from the Pontyclun quarter, Goytre shifted the gears into neutral and seemed content to coast for the remainder of the match.

However, complacency comes at a cost and Goytre paid a heavy price in the 91st minute when an attempted clearance by Goytre defender Dean Taylor rebounded off a Ponty player and into the Goytre goal.

From the kick-off, things took another turn for the worse as the visitors swarmed forward and a shot outside the penalty area flew past unsighted keeper Gareth Williams and into the corner of the Plough Road net.

This last minute surge of catch-up on behalf of Pontyclun was a huge blow to Goytre's chances of surviving relegation, especially when on Saturday they were soundly beaten by the Abertillery Bluebirds, who clipped their wings to the tune of 0-4.

Goytre are now just sitting just outside the messy mire of the drop-zone in Welsh League Division Three, and really need to salvage a result against fellow relegation-threatened rivals Newport Civil Service this Saturday to give themselves a little bit of breathing space.
