A group of popular local performers have united to create a new theatre company, Aber Alternatives.

The group’s debut marks a return of live theatre to Abergavenny’s Melville Centre of the Arts this month with an Olivier Award-winning play, The Pillowman.

This delightfully dark comedy is certain to brighten the cold October nights, but will also leave you questioning the role of the ‘artist’ in society and the price we pay for the freedom of expression.

The play reunites some of Abergavenny’s best-known performers who haven’t taken to the stage in over 20 months.

Andrew Fowler and Luke Williams play imprisoned brothers Katurian and Michal with Molly Brickley-Clark and Janine Davies completing the cast, playing detectives Tupolski and Ariel who are trying to get to the bottom of a number of gruesome murders.

The show is directed by theatre stalwart and recipient of the A4B Bernie Award for contribution to theatre Snowy Clarke.

The play, The Pillowman is written by Martin McDonagh, the master of the horror-comedy and has delighted audiences across the globe.

It is widely regarded as one of the greatest plays of the past 25 years and sees a writer, Katurian, being questioned over the content of his short stories by detective duo, Tuplolski and Ariel as they play out the typical ‘Good Cop, Bad Cop’ routine Katurian realises things aren’t quite what they seem.

Things go from bad to worse for the writer when he realises that his brother Michal is in the cell next to his and the detectives suspect the brothers of a string of horrific crimes.

Are the brothers responsible? Are the detectives trying to set them up? Have any crimes even been committed? The show will leave you second-guessing yourself and questioning what you know right up to its shocking conclusion.

The Pillowman can be seen at the Melville Centre of Arts in Abergavenny on Friday, October 29t and Saturday, October 30 all proceeds will be donated to the St David’s Foundation.

The audience will be socially distanced in line with current Welsh Government Guidelines. There are limited tickets still available online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/aber-alts
