ABERGAVENNNY tennis club has started the year with a bang after receiving two grants for the development of tennis in the area.
The Welsh Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) which awards grants on behalf of the Community First Trust Fund (CFTF) has awarded the club a grant of just over £2,000 to work with Deri View school on a coaching and membership programme that will see youngsters of ages five to nine getting coaching, free tennis rackets and free club branded hoodies.
Club Chairman Mike Buck said, "As welsh club of the year this is a fantastic opportunity to continue to develop a long standing relationship with Deri View school and demonstrate the club's commitment to reach out to the community and make Abergavenny a hub for junior tennis development in South Wales under the stewardship of coach of the year Robert Wedlake." The second grant was an award from the Community Chest for £1,000 to commence cardio tennis at the leisure centre in Abergavenny.
Cardio tennis is a complete fitness workout set to music that has swept the United states and is becoming very popular throughout the UK. Cardio tennis is suitable for all ages and you do not have to be a tennis player to benefit and enjoy the sessions. The club's coaching team have a half-term break full of activities planned with primary school tennis camps running 12-3.30pm each day. Camps include tennis coaching, games, coordination skills and multi-sport activity and are suitable for newcomers and regular players. For eight and under and nine and under players who already play, mini tennis competitions will be running on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at local Leisure Centres.
