LOCAL lad and Glamorgan cricketer Mark Wallace has been handed the captaincy of his team during their pre-season tour of South Africa.

Glamorgan flew out on Monday and Wallace will helm the team throughout the 12 day tour and remain in the role until new captain and South African native Alviro Petersen picks up the reins later this month.

During their tour, Glamorgan will be based at the home of the Highveld Lions in Potchefstroom and will play three one day games against Uganda, the North West Cricket Union and a North West Invitational XI.

Glamorgan's managing director of cricket, Colin Metson said, "Mark is a well respected senior player who has a wealth of experience as vice-captain. Mark will do a great job in this role."

Tour captain Mark Wallace said, "I'm delighted to be able to lead the team on this tour. The whole staff and playing squad are looking forward to getting out there and playing cricket. It's been a long winter period and we've all been training extremely hard, it's time to put everything into practice. The boys are in good spirits and are itching for the season to start so they can get on with the job in hand."

Wallace will be joined on the tour by fellow Abergavenny lad and friend Mike Powell who made his Glamorgan debut in 1997.
