A LOCAL volunteer group donated supplies to firefighters tackling the blaze in Blaenavon following their continued efforts over the last week.

They provided 20 cases of water and three boxes of Haribo sweets showing how even a small contribution can make a huge difference to the firefighters working at the scene.

The donation was organised by members of Newport Canal Cleanup and Fundraising Group, a small group of volunteers who regularly raise money to support good causes and offer their time and effort to support the community.

Darren Rice, a spokesperson from the group, said: “We are always happy to help.” “If we can help we will.”

The group supports charities and community projects such as the food bank, and in this case the Blaenavon wildfire.

The group wanted to help the firefighters who’s hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed and in doing so Darren got in touch with his friend who works at the Malpas Fire station in Newport to see how they could assist. The group spent £50 and received two more £25 donations from two ladies in the community, Jane Gibbons and Sharon Louise Watts.

The supplies were dropped off at Malpas Fire Station and taken up on the groups behalf to support the unwavering efforts shown by the firefighters during this difficult time.

Lots more people have shown their support by donating supplies, including Morrisons in Abergavenny who have been providing hot food to the fire service.

The wildfire has been going on for over a week now, and emergency services are still showing strength and resilience to do all they can to bring it to safe close.
