THE design for the Usk community tapestry project was recently unveiled to an awaiting crowd at the town's Centenary Hall.
Measuring 6ft 6ins by 9ft, the tapestry has been designed by Llangybi artist Susie Martin who also designed the Abergavenny Tapestry which is now hanging in the Tithe Barn.
Unveiling the design, Usk's Mayor, Councillor Tony Kear said the tapestry was part of the town's future history and he thanked all those who had helped the project reach this stage.
Accompanied by his four-year-old daughter Lucy, Councillor Kear put the first stitch in the canvas.
He was followed by Mrs Margot Etheridge, a long-time citizen of Usk and a previous Mayor of the town, and then by Father Julian Gray, vicar of Usk, and his daughter Abigail, who had entertained the audience with her flute playing before the start of the ceremony.
Chair of the Usk Tapestry Group, Elizabeth Baker, said the project was tribute to its instigator, Margaret Turner who, sadly, died just a few weeks before the unveiling. Mrs Baker thanked all the townspeople for their support -past, present and future.
Mrs Baker also praised 18-year-old Jamie Jones, a gifted young musician who had composed The Usk Fanfare especially for the occasion which was premiered by cornet player Lee Jones.
Stitching on the tapestry project begins with starter sessions at Usk Sessions House, on May 6, May 9 and May 14. All potential stitchers are welcome.
