THIS week sees a group of keen cyclists from Crickhowell setting off on their marathon journey from Santander in northern Spain to start their road trip back to Scaer, and on to the ferryport at Roscoff - a trip of around 800 miles of, including a bit of the Pyrenees, in 12 days.
As promised the group will be updating their progress regularly via our website:
Hi from a damp and very windy Bairitz. The rain held off for most of the day but the wind off the sea made for difficult cycling especially in the afternoon- I got blown over once when I stopped to check the route!
Unfortunately much of the middle part of the ride was on busy roads which made it a bit stressful.
However the early part of the route took us along some beautiful coastal scenery as we left Letekio, with the usual ups and downs associated with coast roads.
Eventually we arrived at San Sebastián, a beautiful city but with lots of traffic but fortunately a single main road straight through.
Then it was on to the border with France - blink and you would have missed it. But it was good to understand the signs after all that Basque!
A final push along a coastal cycle path in the teeth of the gale and home for the night in the Karitza hotel. Thank goodness we weren’t on the ferry today it might have been a bit uncomfortable!!
Today is Laurence’s birthday so we just been to Carrefour for bubbles and candles.
For the technically minded we covered 80 miles and did 1490 metres of climb - tomorrow looks a bit flatter! Sponsorship keeps coming in including £20 from a couple on the ferry - total now stands at over £1300!
