On Monday, January 25, Professor Paul Roache from Cardiff University School of Physics and Astronomy, will give a talk on Gaia, an ESA project which was launched on 2013, which is constructing a 3D map of around a billion objects in space, which will create an extraordinary 3D dimensional map, of more than a thousand million stars throughout our galaxy and beyond. The project will record their luminosity, composition, all of which it is hoped will provide data relating to various aspects of the evolutionary history of our own galaxy.

Gaia’s sensors are so sensitive that they can detect bodies 4000 times fainter than the naked human eye can see.

Professor Roache, will update us with how the project is proceeding and will give his talk at a new venue, The Kings Head, Cross Street, Abergavenny. NP7 5EU. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and anyone who has an interest in Astronomy is welcome to attend.
