COMMONWEALTH games double medallist and London 2010 hopeful Becky James will by honoured by her hometown in the new year when she receives a Shield from Abergavenny Town Council.

The teen cycling sensation who captured the world's attention at Delhi with two powerhouse performances which saw her bag a bronze and secure a silver, has been invited by Abergavenny Town Council to attend a function in the new year to receive her award.

Abergavenny's Mayor, Councillor Norma Watkins told the Chronicle, "We have already written a letter to Miss James officially inviting her to a special reception. Unfortunately because of her hectic schedule she is unable to attend, but we are hopeful her parents will attend to receive the Shield on her behalf."

Earlier this week Becky just missed out on being crowned 2010 Welsh Sports Personality Of The Year, but hopefully the Town Shield will act as some consolation, as Mayor Watkins explained, "Obviously the Shield is not in the same league as the title of Welsh Sporting Personality 2010, but it's very much a case of what Abergavenny can do to honour one of its own.

"I think I speak for everyone in Abergavenny when I say how proud we all our of what Becky has achieved in the world of sport to date. And the Shield is our own little way of saying congratulations and keep at doing what you do best, because the whole of the town is behind you."
