THE SPATE of lead thefts from historic buildings is continuing in Abergavenny. Last week the Chronicle reported on the Lloyds TSB building in Cross Street having its lead ripped from its roof and now other town centre traders have reported similar incidents.

Burtons and Stead and Simpson in the High Street have been targeted by thieves stealing lead from their roofs along with the Bethany Chapel in Market Street, which is currently being renovated. A spokesman for Abergavenny police said they were unsure if the buildings were being targeted separately or were attacked on the same night. Police patrols have been stepped up in the town centre but have asked the public to be vigilant and if they see what looks like construction work being carried out at night to contact them. He added: "We'd rather have a wasted call to check on bona fide workmen than a building to be targeted in this way."
