Abergavenny Thursdays U14 - 4
Penygarn U14 - 3
THE Abergavenny Thursdays U14s finished started their string of pre-season friendlies in emphatic fashion by beating the Tesco Cup South Wales stage champions Penygarn at Pen-y-Pound.
In front of a decent crowd the Thursdays didn't disappoint, with debut players Alex Tilling and Rhys Williams scoring a brace apiece to make it 4-3 to the side with the home advantage.
Tilling netted his first through a header set up by a clever little chip from midfielder Conor Dando.
His second was just as sweet as he powered in a curling shot from the edge of the box that thundered past the Penygarn keeper to make it 2-0 to the Thursdays.
Whilst the Thursdays were hellbent on the offensive game, their defense worked just as hard to allow the visitors no quarter - with goalkeeper Jake Grove making some great saves to maintain the Thursdays' 2-0 lead.
Yet the wolf could not be kept forever from the Pen-y-Pound door, and Penygarn came knocking with three successive goals to give them a 3-2 lead.
The Thursdays' heads started to sink at this point but their spirits were quickly lifted when new boy Rhys Williams waltzed past three defenders and cleverly slotted the ball past the keeper to make it even stevens.
The last 15 minutes was pretty much end to end football, but some solid defending and another great goal from Williams sealed the win for the Thursdays against formidable opposition.
This was a well deserved win for the Thursdays who are already showing signs of being a strong team with character and spirit - and one who are looking to build on last year's success when they won their league.
The U14s are are back in action tonight when they face Cwmbran Celtic with a 6.00pm kick-off.
