Abergavenny Thursdays - 4

Race - 2

ABERGAVENNY Thursdays recent run of good form continued on Saturday as their skill and pace proved too much for Race.

Played at Pen-y-Pound, this Gwent County Division Three encounter saw the Thursdays open their account with last week' hat-trick hero Matthew Heritage, who wasted no time in reacquainting himself with the back of the net.

Heritage nearly scored again later in the match, but a fingertip save at full-stretch by the Race goalkeeper denied him a brace.

The other Thursdays' goals came thick and fast from a header by Nick Dash, and strikes by the club's 'Mr Versatile' Steve Collet and Ben Bannon.

Although the Thursdays were 2-0 up at the interval, Race gave them a bit more of a run for their money in the second-half and netted two goals of their own.

Club secretary Chris Wilkins told the Chronicle, "After Race scored in the second-half to make it even stevens at 2-2, we looked a bit rocky for a bit, and seemed in danger of throwing away the game, but manager Phil Hemmings reshuffled the squad a bit, by putting Ben Bannon on the left and Andrew Hamett on the right, with Steve Collet moving from centre-half to centre-forward.

"This seemed to be just the ticket, and the whole team appeared to be a lot more composed as we bagged another two goals and run out winners."

Wilkins added, "This was another good result for us, and the third league win in a row. The team spirit in the camp at the moment is sky high, and we'll be looking to carry our recent winning momentum into this Saturday's away game against Sebastopol."
