STAGING a musical production could be a major headache for many theatrical companies, but for one Abergavenny man it's the only life he has ever known.
Ken Caswell found fame when he worked as musical director for Sir Cameron Mackintosh in many of his West End shows.
And as a director, Ken took on a range of musicals all over the world including Les Miserables, Fiddler on the Roof and Oliver.
Over the years he worked with an array of artists and has persuaded some of them to perform for the Abergavenny public this Saturday (April 2) at the Borough Theatre.
The production, Three Divas in Concert, is in aid of Abergavenny's Citizens Advice Bureau and features an evening of Rodgers and Hammerstein music from the all the popular musicals including South Pacific, Oklahoma, The King and I and Carousel along with others that the world of musical theatre's most endearing partnership have written with others including the collaboration with Jerome Kern for the musical Show Boat.
The singing divas are Stephanie Benavente (right), Claire Hammacott (bottom) and Elizabeth Tiley (top) who have all worked with Ken Caswell in the past, and will be accompanied by Jeanette Massochi on piano.
Two guest singers are also on the bill and include Michael Riseley, a member of the Welsh National Youth Opera who played the role of Pirelli in their production of Sweeney Todd, and Christian Jon Billett, a professional West End and operatic singer.
Claire Hammacott's experience includes being part of the cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera where she enjoyed three years understudying and playing the role of Carlotta in both the Manchester and Edinburgh productions before joining the London production.
After appearances in Les Miserables at the Palace Theatre, London, she fulfilled a lifelong dream to play the lead role of Christine Daae, in Phantom. Claire also performed at the formal opening ceremony of the Wales Millennium Centre as did Stephanie Benavente, another of the three divas.
Stephanie has worked in musical theatre, radio and television, recording studios and concerts as a soloist in many classical performances, including Handel's Messiah and Mozart's Requiem.
Her West End musical theatre work includes Les Miserables at the Palace Theatre, London, covering Fantine and Eponine which she played many times, and Grease at the Dominion Theatre. Today Stephanie is a highly respected singing teacher and vocal coach, and now runs her own successful theatrical agency.
The third diva, Elizabeth Tiley has had the privilege of performing on numerous occasions at St David's Hall Cardiff, most recently in The Three Phantoms in Concert. Elizabeth is a former member of the National Youth Choir of Wales and is currently rehearsing The Sleeper with Welsh National Youth Opera.
The idea for the concert came about when Alasdair Rolls, a volunteer fund raiser for the Citizens Advice Bureau was looking for new avenues in which to generate extra income.
He said: "I approached Ken because of his reputation for putting on amazing works of theatre. For any production to be a success it has to be a great show and I knew Ken could deliver.
"I've attended the rehearsals and it's obvious to me that the Three Divas are very talented and it should be a moving experience on the night.
"Anywhere near a full house will mean that the event will have been successful and the CAB will benefit from the performance."
Ken, who also lectures at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama said: "Putting on any event is a challenge and this is no exception.
Everybody involved in this show is a professional in their own right and while the pressure may be on, I am sure that everybody will pull together to make it an event to remember."
