IT was a a case of 'aces high' at Abergavenny tennis club recently a they celebrated a triple whammy of achievements.

Not only were the Club winners of the 'Welsh Tennis Club' of the year award with Robert Wedlake picking up the 'Welsh Coach of the year' but they also celebrated the opening of the new facilities at Pen-y-pound.

What started off as a dream over a year ago came into reality during November when the new floodlights and new courts were opened for use.

Thanks to the support of Tennis Wales, a grant and loan from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and self-funding, the club has been able to relay its three macadam courts and install state of the art floodlighting and resurface the mini tennis area.

Abergavenny tennis club now boasts five all weather floodlit tennis courts and a floodlit mini tennis area for youngsters up to the age of nine.

Chairman Mike Buck explained, "This development is fantastic news for the town and the club and well worth the hard negotiating with planners and potential funders.

"When we only had two courts floodlit it was difficult to cram the activities we do in the summer on five courts down to just two in the winter.

"Now however we can expand the programme and increase the membership to keep the courts busy throughout the year."

To celebrate the new facilities all the courts were open every night with a different event and free use of the floodlights.

There will be an official opening of the new facilities in the spring. For enquiries about the facilities and coaching programmes on offer readers can e-mail [email protected]">[email protected].
