Everything from an up-cycled hatstand and a set of goalposts to meat hampers and restaurant vouchers went under the hammer on Sunday when a television crew descended on Abergavenny to film an episode of Street Auction.
Hosted by Paul Martin of Flog It fame, the new 15-part BBC series will feature a variety of locations across the UK, bringing together a street and a community for a major fund-raising effort.
And in a surprise twist at the end of each episode, one of the organisers, secretly nominated by the community, will be the main benefactor of the money raised on the day.
In Abergavenny that winner was Sue Jones, the driving force behind Crafty Women, a joint initiative between Monmouthshire Housing Association (MHA) and Arts Alive Wales to provide creative opportunities for women in the local area.
Sue was presented with a new laptop and has also been promised a place on a future arts training course.
Prior to the event, neighbours in the Highfield Crescent area had been asked to donate unwanted and unloved items to be sold at the ‘pop up’ auction. Local businesses also offered items for sale.
The auction in turn formed part of a street party with stalls selling cakes, bric-a-brac, books and plants and family entertainment provided by a magician, a rock choir, cyclists and local rugby and hockey clubs.
In total the event raised more than £900.
“Lots of people turned up and the weather was fantastic. It was a really successful day,” said one of the Street Auction team. The series is due to be broadcast nationally in September.
