Members of the South Asian Community in Monmouthshire joined forces in Abergavenny to celebrate their heritage and promote their connections with the local area.

The South Asian Heritage Celebration, which was organised by Monmouthshire Council and the Abergavenny Meghala Malayali Association (AMMA) opened a welcoming space at Abergavenny Community Centre on Saturday August where all were welcome to share stories and experience different traditions. The event put the importance of the community connections and diversity in the limelight.

Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Equalities and Engagement, Cllr Angela Sandles said, “It was wonderful to see people of all ages coming together to celebrate, learn from one another and enjoy the rich cultures that help make Monmouthshire such a welcoming place to live.”

“Events like this strengthen community ties, encourage understanding and remind us of the value of celebrating the diversity that exists across our county.”

“Thank you to everyone who helped organise the event and to all those who attended. The warmth, enthusiasm and sense of community on display throughout the afternoon were truly inspiring.”

Residents also joined members of the AMMA alongside Council Leader, Cllr Mary Ann Brocklesby and the Chair of MCC, Cllr Tudor Thomas.

Families from all corners of the world were able to meet new people, learn more about South Asian heritage and celebrate the diversity that enriches communities across Monmouthshire. There were cultural performances, lots of food and drink, arts and crafts and opportunities for people to connect with one another.

The activities included classical and folk dance performances, traditional songs, a saree draping demonstration and interactive sessions that encouraged people of all ages to get involved.

MMC said it would like to thank AMMA, community volunteers, performers, partners and everyone who attended for making the event such a success. The council remains committed to working with local communities and organisations to create opportunities that celebrate diversity, encourage inclusion and bring people together.
