An orange glow will be flooding the shopping streets of Abergavenny thanks to support from the town’s Soroptimist club for the United Nation’s campaign against gender-based violence.

While gender-based violence can happen to anyone, anywhere, some women and girls are particularly vulnerable. Examples of gender-based violence include domestic abuse, forced marriage, rape and sexual exploitation.

To coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against women and girls on Monday 25 November shops and public buildings, including Paige Turner the mannequin outside the library and the Abergavenny and District Tourist Association window in High Cross, will be decked out with orange displays, banners, ribbons and posters.

The UN chose orange for the campaign to symbolise a brighter future for those affected by gender-based violence. On Saturday 23 November and Tuesday 26 November Soroptimists will be in High Cross to engage with the public and hand out leaflets about the campaign which aims to signpost those suffering from, or who are under threat from, such violence to organisations that can help.

This has been made possible by support from the town council who granted the club help with printing costs.

The club are also grateful to the businesses and organisations who have agreed to host displays during 16 days of activism across the world.
