PARTS of Monmouthshire remain cut off as teams work around the clock to dig out the county’s hamlets and minor roads.

With all primary and secondary roads now open and passable with care, drifts still exist across the county and many roads are still narrowed by snow.

A spokesman for MCC said that the Bont straight mile and the road to Llanddewi Rhyderch remained closed on Monday morning and are very icy and narrow and proving to be challenging for road clearing machines.

“The road at the Hogs Head is also still closed although a farmer is making his way across now to clear it by end of day,” he said.

Llanvihangel Crucorney /Skirrid Pitch is closed although the - village has been dug out and cleared for residents.

Also remaining closed are Firs Rd, The Wern, Clytha, Tregare Church,Cwmyoy Oak Lane ( from the mast to Llanellen) and Pwllddu.

A council team is currently re-assessing Llanwenarth Breast and Pentre Lane for safe entry with a tractor and JCB later today

“All domestic waste services are out collecting today and while some roads remain impassable but we will do all we can,” said a spokesman.

“We will do our best to return for any refuse collections that were missed on Friday. Please leave your bags out today and tomorrow. We will collect food, garden and recycling on your next collection day,” he added.

Recycling centres as Llanfoist and Mitchel Troy are now open with the Usk site being cleared with a view to opening later today. As the county struggles to return to normal, MCC Chairman, Councillor Maureen Powell has praised the teams of workers who have worked non-stop since Thursday to clear roads.

“As Chairman of MCC I want to thank the all so much for the marvellous job they all have done, not only getting the main roads cleared and usable, but also the side roads, car parks and estates.

“Whether with trucks,  tractors, or bulldozers their work is exceptional. Also those in the centres coordinating the workforce who have dealt with the problems with good nature and smiles on their faces.

“I am proud to be chairman of a council with such a willing workforce. Well done all of you.  The public should be very pleased to have been served so well,” said Councillor Powell
