FRESH from their success in the South Wales cup tournament, the Abergavenny U15 girls hockey team ended their season in style with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Gwent.

The match was played in a competitive manner from the get go and this set the pattern for the duration.

Both teams displayed great commitment, but Gwent just shaded the opening minutes as they moved skillfully down their right and created some nice movements.

Yet due to the great positional play of Georgie Jones and Alyssa Morgan, Gwent were denied any space to make their movements count.

Abergavenny settled quickly and great movement through the middle by Fleur Atkins and Edith Morris helped release right wing Lara Botting into space.

Alex Jones was unlucky not to finish off a great cross as she was crowded out by desperate defensive numbers.

With the match finely balanced, Gwent took the lead with a confident finish.

Abergavenny drove back at the opposition and forced a series of short corners. One of which Atkins rammed home with a powerful straight drive to equalise.

Shortly after, Botting caught the defence napping when she picked up a sideline ball and drove unopposed into the D to give Aber the lead.

As Gwent began to push forward in search of the equaliser, Nicola Jones prevented drives coming through the middle and Libby Smith kept the opposition left flanks quiet.

As the pressure grew, Ellie Dickinson and Rebecca Brinn stepped into the fray and completed some very assertive tackling to repel attackers.

However, with the pressure came short corners and Gwent finally equalised with their attacker nailing the rebound after a fine save by Jessica.

With the match now all square, it was Abergavenny's turn to force the pace.

With Fleur Atkins covering huge ground between both goals, she was on hand to assist the defence and make great clearances.

Rebecca Brinn demonstrated the most solid and positive of defensive qualities, drawing plaudits from the opposition coach (and Aber's own of course).

Intelligent ball distribution by Libby Smith into space saw Alex Jones regularly beat the defenders to the ball, creating both possession and opportunities.

The tide began to turn in Aber's favour and finally another great clearance released Edith Morris who had switched into the right wing position at the break.

Revelling in her new found role she drove skillfully around the left back and unleashed her cross into the D.

As always, a good striker is always in the right place at the right time, and Alex Jones demonstrated just that with a great finish to the delight of team mates, spectators and coach.

A spokesperson for the club explained, "This hard fought 3-2 victory was a credit to the players' determination. In our first entry into this age range of hockey, we have finished second place in the league which represents a superb all-round performance from everyone involved."
