The most iconic waterway role is, arguably, that of the lock keeper and the charity that looks after the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal is currently recruiting new volunteers.

Glandwr Cymru, the Canal and River Trust in Wales, is searching for people that will be able to volunteer on the historic waterway, helping boaters through the locks, as well as welcoming visitors and giving a hand to the Trust’s teams that help maintain the waterway.

The volunteers will help to keep the age-old tradition alive along the canal, where lock keepers have been part of waterway life for hundreds of years.

Full training is provided and people of all ages and experiences are encouraged to apply. Volunteer lock keepers work on a shift basis throughout the year, with busier periods expected between April and September.

“We get so much positive feedback about the work they do,” said Caroline Kendall, volunteer development coordinator at Glandwr Cymru.
