RICO Yip, a sixth form pupil at Monmouth School, has recently been nominated for a WJEC Innovation award for his A/AS Level Design & Technology project.
Rico's work has been selected as an example of one of the most innovative projects produced in Wales this year by the WJEC examining board. His design, a newspaper holder, uses organic design to impact on the aesthetics of the finished product. By manufacturing the holder out of recycled paper, it is strong, rigid, light, environmentally friendly and inexpensive to make. Rico's project will feature in the WJEC AS / A Level Design & Technology exhibition, taking place in October, where it will be entered into the final competition. Students, teachers and industrialists will all be invited to the exhibition which is taking place over four day in Llandudno and then in Cardiff.
Rico, who is studying A Level Design & Technology at Monmouth School's sister school Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls, said, "I thoroughly enjoyed the process of designing and manufacturing the newspaper holder, and was delighted to be nominated for the WJEC Innovation award. I am looking forward to the exhibition in October and a chance to view other students' projects."
Head of Design & Technology at HMSG, Nyree Clayton said, "We would like to congratulate Rico on this fantastic achievement. Rico worked consistently hard throughout the year and his design shows thoughtfulness, creativity and ingenuity."
