A "FRIGHTENING" number of discarded used needles have been found embedded in a grassy area in Abergavenny.

Dan y Deri resident Albert McNabb said he had received phone calls from neighbours who had seen children playing near the area.

"It's a very frightening thought that children were hanging around where the needles were because we all know how curious children can be," said Mr McNabb.

"We called Monmouthshire County Council and a local officer came up with the yellow disposal boxes and collected a huge amount.

"It's not good enough, people have ways and means of disposing of needles and they are well aware that children play around here. Maybe the council could do regular checks. We're very happy that they came and cleared it away though."

A spokesman for Monmouthshire County Council said, "We are able to confirm that we received a report of dumped syringes on a public right of way to the rear of Dan y Deri , Abergavenny on 8 April.

"One of our enforcement officers visited the site and collected them. Four syringe boxes were found.

"We would like to make it clear that the dumping of needles in this way is completely unacceptable and unnecessary.

"If somebody wants to dispose of used needles, they should hand them to a pharmacy participating in the needle exchange scheme. Boots the Chemist in Abergavenny currently does this.

"Sightings of used needles in public areas are, fortunately, uncommon.

"It is essential that if a member of public does find a needle that it is reported to the one of Council's One Stop Shops. They can ensure that arrangements are made to remove it asap."
