THE landlord of an Abergavenny pub was forced to lock the premises when violence broke out, Cardiff Crown Court heard.

The two men forced their way in and one of them attacked a mother and her son.

Christopher Osbourne, 39, of St David's Road, Abergavenny was jailed for 21 months.

Michael Staniec, 20, of Tippett Close, Ringland, Newport was sentenced to 12 months in a young offender institution, suspended for 18 months.

He was also made subject to an 18 month supervision order and ordered to carry out 100 hours unpaid work for the community and to pay costs of £335.

Osbourne had been found guilty of causing Marie Harvey and her son Christopher Harvey actual bodily harm.

Staniec was found guilty of causing Mr harvey actual bodily harm.

Prosecutor James Wilson said that on January 6 last year the Harveys were drinking in the Crown and Sceptre, pub, Mardy, Abergavenny. The two defendants arrived and "things began to get angry."

Christopher Harvey went outside to get some air followed by Osbourne who head butted him, splitting his lip.

Staniec also became involved. He ran into the pub saying he had been attacked and the landlord then locked the door but the two defendants barged in making threats.

"At that point," said Mr Wilson, "Osbourne punched Mrs Harvey in the face and she fell to the floor."

Robert Buckland, defending Osbourne, said he had nine references which were "glowing."

He said, "He realises the sentencing options. However unpleasant this case has taken a long time to come to court and intervening period.

"He has had no brush with the law and he has successfully put drugs and violence behind him.

"Why things turned the way they did in the pub remains unclear. "

Eugene Egan defending Staniec said, "A witness said that Mr Harvey became agitated in the pub, took off his shirt and had to be restrained. Staniec didn't start the incident but joined in."

Judge Phillip Richards said, "This was a disgusting incident." Osbourne, he said carried out a "vicious attack." on Mrs Harvey.
