Local Welsh Lib Dems have expressed concerns following the news that Powys County Council is soon to start an informal consultation on the proposed closure of Crickhowell depot.
The depot provides vital storage for items like road gritters, salt and other objects that help maintain Powys’ roads.
Kirsty Williams, AM for Brecon and Radnorshire said, “I hope these proposals do not make it off the ground. When bad weather hits in this area, we need to be able to clear our roads as quickly as possible to ensure the safety of our constituents. I have major fears that the sale of Crick yard will limit our availability to do that.
“The consultation is due to open shortly and I hope as many Crickhowell residents as possible will respond so that we can defeat these short-sighted proposals.”
John Morris, Welsh Lib Dem Councillor for Crickhowell, added, “In a rural area it is vital to have yards available locally. In adverse weather if the yard closes there is no guarantee that local council workers could get to Brecon to start clearing roads.
“This proposal is to save money but I do not see how this would be achieved and it could cause many problems.”
