Gwent Police is currently taking part in a national week long campaign aimed at highlighting the work involved with alcohol-related incidents.
As part of an Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) 'In Focus' week of action, officers across the force are working with local partners to target alcohol-related crime and incidents and working with late night establishments to make sure that people are safe.
Research shows that over a third of violent, non-domestic crimes occur between 6pm and 3am on Friday and Saturday nights, and between 9pm and midnight on Sunday nights. Furthermore, 43.4 per cent of violent non-domestic offences recorded in 2012 in Gwent occurred within 50 metres of a public house, bar or nightclub.
During this week, from September 16 to September 22, officers are making joint visits to pubs and clubs around Monmouthshire and other areas with trading standards, licensing and environmental health officers, as well as South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.
Officers will be patrolling hot-spot areas for underage drinking and anti-social behaviour, where alcohol will be seized from under-18s and their parents or guardians will be informed.
In addition to the enforcement activity that will be taking place, officers are using the week to educate people about the consequences of drinking to excess. Talks are being delivered in local schools and youth clubs throughout the week.
Chief Inspector Simon Jeffries, who is leading on the campaign for Gwent Police, said, "There is a known link between alcohol abuse and violent crimes and we work to prevent issues in towns and city centres from escalating. We want our towns and city centres to be vibrant and for people to enjoy them."
