A POLICE operation in Usk last month saw 73 heavy goods vehicles stopped in a bid to tackle the vehicles going through the town contravening the the legal weight restrictions.
On August 12 and 20, Gwent Police officers out stop checks in relation to the issue of heavy goods vehicles using the A472 from the A449 through Usk to its junction with the A4042 at Little Mill in contravention of the legal weight restrictions.
The operation involved officers from Gwent Police roads policing unit, Monmouth neighbourhood policing team and also Vehicles and Operators Services Agency (VOSA), who carried out driver and vehicle checks.
Over the two days 73 vehicles were stopped with five fixed penalty notices being issued for driving in a weight restricted area.
Two verbal warnings were also issued for the same offence and several vehicles were turned around so preventing them from driving through the town.
VOSA checked 17 vehicles and issued five immediate prohibitions including a diesel leak, driver hours and vehicle defects.
There will be continued operations and focussed roads policing daily patrols in the area providing further education and enforcement.
