LOCAL police are still appealing for witnesses to an incident which took place on Wednesday March 27 in the Clytha area which has left two people with serious facial injuries.

The incident occurred at around 7pm when the 57 year old driver of a silver VW?Passat and his 54 year old passenger were struck in the face by glass.

Both reported hearing a loud bang before being hit.

Gwent Police investigated the incident and discovered that a bottle had smashed the windscreen just above the dashboard and that shards of glass had hit the two men, who are both from the Tredegar area.

Both were went taken straight to Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny where the driver remained for six days.

Doctors fear that the extent of his injuries are so great that he may never regain the sight in his right eye.

The passenger also received cuts to both of his eyes.

Recalling the incident the victims, who do not wish to be named, said that they believed they were near the turning to Clytha when they heard the bang.

They believe that a car was travelling past them in the opposite direction, which may have been silver in colour and that there were also two cars some distance ahead of them at the time.

At the moment Gwent police are treating the incident as an assault.

Officers says they are keeping 'open minded' and trying to establish whether the glass bottle was thrown deliberately from another vehicle.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have been on the old A40 between Raglan and Abergavenny and who may have seen the incident, or noticed any vehicle being driven erratically or items being thrown to contact them on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
