THIEVES who fill up and drive off from service stations are the target of a new scheme launched by Gwent Police in Monmouthshire.
Between August 1 and November 7 there were 21 instances of drivers filling up their vehicles with fuel and then driving off without paying.
In the same period, nine registration plates were stolen from vehicles.
The Garage Watch scheme creates a closer link between police and fuel stations to increase awareness, prevention and the reporting and recording of incidents.
When any fuel theft related offence is reported or witnessed, instant email alerts will be sent to Gwent Police and all fuel stations in Monmouthshire. If any vehicle involved is then spotted at a fuel station the police will be called immediately.
Signs are being put up in fuel stations across Monmouthshire to remind potential fuel thieves that driving off without paying for fuel is a crime and work is underway to catch any offenders.
Service station staff are also being given tips on the prevention of this type of crime.
Sergeant Chris O'Driscoll, of Monmouthshire Local Policing Unit, said, "For the first time petrol stations in Monmouthshire have the means to fight back against fuel thieves.
"From now on any criminal entering the petrol station in a stolen car, or with a stolen number plate, should be aware that garage staff will know the vehicle or plate is stolen and may have already contacted the police."
Branch Manager for Waitrose Abergavenny, Tim Wingrove, said, "It's important we are always looking at ways to improve our community.
"Through local businesses working together with the police to support initiatives like this we can make a positive contribution to achieving that."
If you have any information regarding the theft of fuel from service stations, please contact Gwent Police on 101, or in an emergency dial 999.
Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
