YOUNGSTERS will still have plenty to do this summer despite a cutback in play schemes according to Monmouthshire County Council.
Last year the summer play scheme was reduced as a result of the budget shake-up and despite Abergavenny town council offering £10,000 towards the scheme for this year, MCC are not using the money.
The town council allocated £10,000 to fund the scheme but members were left in the dark up until this week on whether the money would be needed.
At the last meeting Town Council members said they were unhappy about the lack of communication.
Town clerk, Jim Wakeley said last year it cost £8,000 to fund but they have allocated a contingency amount of £10,000.
He said the council were promised details of this year's scheme before Christmas.
Councillor Douglas Edwards told the town council he was "baffled" by the decision not to use £10,000 and set up the playschemes for parents.
He said, "It could help this scheme do a lot of good work for a lot more children. We have great promises and nothing comes of it. This is why we have money in the budget to support people. We must call the officer here to discuss the problem and to make sure something is sorted for next year."
In a letter from Mike Moran to the town council he states that although this year's activities are not the same as playschemes held in previous years there will be a wide range of activities on offer.
He proposes a meeting at the end of this year to discuss what type of provision members would like to see next year and to start planning for summer 2008 early. Monmouthshire Youth Service are organising extra activities this year, all events are listed on http://www.monyouth.net">www.monyouth.net which include arts and crafts, theme park trips, sports, football coaching and courses.
