Drivers and residents across Monmouthshire are being advised to plan ahead this month as Monmouthshire County Council issues a series of temporary traffic regulation notices under Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Head of Neighbourhood Services, Carl Touhig, confirmed the planned closures on Wednesday, August 5, to allow vital infrastructure repairs, utility installations, and maintenance works to proceed safely.

  • Penperlleni (Plough Road): A short-term closure will come into effect on Monday, August 10, and is expected to finish by Wednesday, August 12. A 65-metre stretch of Plough Road, beginning roughly 50 metres from its junction with Star Road, is closed to facilitate safe connection works by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water. Drivers are being diverted via Star Road, the A4042, the A472, and Cefn Mawr Lane.
  • Govilon (Twyn Allwys Road and Link Road): On Monday, August 17, essential poling and cabling works will prompt off-peak closures between 9:30am and 3:30pm. The work affects an 850-metre section of Twyn Allwys Road (starting 260 metres from the B4246 Merthyr Road junction) and the full stretch of Link Road from Twyn Allwys Road to Tyla Road. A official diversion is signed along Tyla Road, Station Road, and the B4246 Merthyr Road.
  • Bont (Great House Road): Also starting on August 17 , civil engineering works will close Great House Road between its junctions with Danygraig Road and Cefn Llaithan Road. Works are scheduled to finish by September 4. Drivers should follow the diversion route via Cefn Llaithan Road, New Line Road, and New Inn Road.
  • Bettws (R4 Middle Bettws Farm to Great Gott): A longer-term project will begin on Monday, 10 August 2026, to carry out essential repairs on a highway retaining wall. A 115-metre stretch of the R4 road, located about 1.4 km from the Old Hereford Road junction, will remain restricted until work concludes, expected around Friday, September 18. The detour route directs traffic via the R4 Pont Esgob Farm stretch, R5 Cwm Road, R1 Llanfihangel Crucorney to Brynarw, the A465, and Old Hereford Road.

Council officials have confirmed that reasonable access will be maintained for residents living along all affected stretches of road. However, motorists are reminded that under Section 16(1) of the Act, failing to obey temporary road restrictions constitutes a legal offence.
