Blaenavon Blues - 5
Govilon AFC - 2
THE Blaenavon Blues extracted some sweet revenge for the 0-6 hammering they suffered at the hands of Govilon on the opening day of the season with a memorable win at the Memorial Ground.
The Blues were missing a number of regulars due to injuries and other commitments while Govilon were also a shadow of the side which Blaenavon had faced earlier this season.
With a fierce and fat sun sitting high in the sky, the game had a real end of season vibe.
However, the young Blues side made hard work of it as they allowed Govilon to creep into a 0-2 first half lead.
Richard McCarthy opened Govilon's account when he fired home a free kick from 40 yards out.
The shot flew past the Blues reserve keeper Ash Paine, who could only watch and wonder as the ball thundered home.
McCarthy was on hand again for the second free kick from distance, which Paine managed to get a hand to only for Leon Gilchrist to bundle the ball home for the away side.
Although the Blues had dominated possession during the first half and at times played some quality football, the game had a real flat feeling to it.
Blues stand in manager Neil Cox took off Brad Jones at half time and replaced him with Matthew 'Berba' Cox who had an immediate impact and caused problems for the visitors' defence.
James Cox finally clawed one back for the Blues when some good play between Adam Johnson and Ryan Simons opened up space in the box for him to to fire home.
Cox bagged the equaliser when he beat the Govilon off side trap and within a few minutes the Blues found themselves in front when Simons put a telling pass into the box for Johnson to slot the ball away from a tight angle.
The Blues were now in full control of the game. As Govilon struggled in the heat, Blaenavon capitalised through 'Berba' who bagged his brace and made it 4-2 to the Blues.
James Cox completed the come back for the Blues to make it 5-2 at the end of play and honours even between the two sides as the season draws to an end.
