ABERGAVENNY Bowls Club won on three rinks to record a victory by 98 shots to 75 in their MBA game away to Rhymney.
The rink of Keith Richards was eight shots down after three ends but then reversed the situation to take the lead on the sixth end. They then extended their lead to win by 27 shots to 21. Robert Poynter's rink took control from the start of their match and continued their dominance throughout to win by 32 shots to 10.
The rink of Ieuan Jenkins was involved in a close game but they scored five and six shots on the tenth and fourteenth ends respectively which allowed them to secure a victory by 23 shots to 21. John Beaton's rink was level until the seventh end but then conceded eight shots on the next four ends. They never recovered this deficit and lost by 23 shots to 16.
In the GBL game at Avenue Road where Blackwood were the visitors, Abergavenny won on one of the three rinks but were well beaten on the other two rinks and therefore lost by 74 shots to 43. The one winning rink was that of Derek Wood who reversed an early deficit to win by 23 shots to 15. Other rink scores were A Morgan 10 – 31 and Colin Roberts 10 – 31.
Club member Jack Vale, along with his playing partner Daniel Cushing of Islwyn Park, has reached the semi-final of the Alan Williams Trophy. This trophy is for the Welsh Under–16 Pairs, with both the semi-final and final being played at Llandrindod Wells on August 22. These two players are the first pair from Monmouthshire to qualify for this stage of the competition.
This week-end Abergavenny have EMBA games at Monmouth on Saturday and Caldicot on Sunday and play a local derby at Bailey Park in the GBL on Saturday.
