Monmouth AM Nick Ramsay was disappointed to learn from the Welsh Government that there are no immediate plans to make safety improvements at the A40 pedestrian crossing to Raglan Castle.
The Conservative wrote to the Welsh Government’s cabinet secretary for Infrastructure, Ken Skates AM, after being contacted by local constituents who have launched a petition calling for road signs in both directions on the A40 near the Raglan roundabout.
“Currently the crossing point is unmarked and most motorists are unaware that it exists,” said Mr Ramsay. “As a result, motorists drive extremely fast on the downhill approach to the roundabout and when leaving the roundabout in the opposite direction.
“Suitable signage, coupled with a reduced speed limit in this area, would certainly help make it safer for pedestrians crossing the busy A40 at this point.
“Hopefully, a reduced speed limit would help prevent future road traffic accidents at the Old Monmouth Road crossing, and my constituents have also requested that a new roundabout should be seriously considered at this accident blackspot,
“Local residents’ views are supported by Raglan Community Council and I believe by the Highways Department of Monmouthshire County Council.
“There is obviously a very strong feeling among local people that this crossing point is potentially dangerous and that signs warning drivers in advance would go some way towards helping make the crossing safer.”
