A NEW mural could be completed in Abergavenny in time for next year's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Peacocks, the owners of the Bon Marché shop in High Street have been making enquiries about having a mural painted on their wall to complement the historical mural painted by local artist Frances Baines on the opposite wall.
This was commissioned by Abergavenny Town Council and at their meeting last week councillors talked about whether this mural needs touching up.
But they agreed with Mrs Baines that the work will not need doing for at least three years.
This will cost at least £5,500 to do, plus the cost of hiring scaffolding, so there was some discussion about this cost.
Councillor Paul Jordan suggested the council should set aside £2,000 a year for the next three years to cover this project and this was agreed.
Councillor John Prosser said the mural was very popular and he had seen tourists taking photographs of it only days earlier.
They were very impressed to see that the mural depicted the history of the town and as a result they went down to see the Tithe Barn which has been restored as an exhibition and visitor centre where the Millennium Tapestry is displayed.
Councillor Jordan said the mural in Red Square is very pleasing to both local people and visitors and was admired by everyone who comes to Abergavenny. Councillor Roger Harris agreed and seconded his proposal to set aside £2,000 a year.
