FOLLOWING the local government elections in May at which a number of Llantilio Pertholey Councillors decided to stand down, members learnt at their September meeting that vacancies are now almost all filled, with just one seat (Croesonen East) presently vacant.
Chairman, councillor David Spencer, said he is very pleased that former councillors Martin Bishop, Allan Brown, Doug Davies, and Norma Watkins have been re-appointed, and was especially glad to welcome new councillors Margaret Harris and Gary Beven.
"We have an extensive programme of work before us", said Cllr. Spencer, "and there will be plenty for the new team to do."
A major aspect of council's work will involve taking forward its Environmental Policy following the completion of its local Schools Competition in the summer. The Community Council is presently engaged in programmes to promote cleaner streets by reducing dog waste, and a plastic bag campaign in which retailers will continue to supply them, if needed, but with the "green" logos of participating Community Councils clearly visible.
Also under discussion is a possible use of water power in the area, as proposed by Brecon Beacons National Park. And as preparation for extension of council's policies and plans, councillor Spencer, together with Environment Committee Chairman councillor Councillor Barbara Symons, will attend a training event focusing on Transition Towns.
The council continues its valued liaison with the local police, and were pleased to learn of intended action to tighten-up on speeding and other aspects of road-use nuisance within the Community Council's area. PC Tracey Bowen-Quirk reported that public participation in local PACT meetings had been very helpful in identifying problems, and that the police very much welcomed this.
