Six-year-old Nathan Jenkins is recovering well after a five and a half hour operation to remove a brain tumour at Great Ormond Street Hospital last Thursday S.

Nathan, a pupil at Our Lady and St Michael's school in Abergavenny has suffered from severe epilepsy since he was a toddler and also has autism spectrum disorder and traits of ADHD.

In recent months his seizures have become more frequent and more acute, seriously affecting his mobility.

"He's now having six or seven seizures a day and everyday life is becoming really difficult," his mum Lorraine Jenkins told the Chronicle.

The hope was that the removal of the brain tumour would significantly improve his condition.

After the operation Lorraine emailed to say Nathan was doing well.

"We won't know if surgery has improved the seizures for a while yet but the operation to remove the brain tumour was a success - and he's only had one seizure so far post operation.

"He will be in hospital until around the middle of this week then, all being well, can continue his recovery at home."

All that will come as welcome news to staff, parents and pupils at Our Lady and St Michael's, who had staged a series of fund-raising events to help cover the family's travel and accommodation expenses.

"The other children all love Nathan," Lorraine had explained. "Although he has so much wrong with him he's a cheeky chappy - a real comedian!"
