MONMOUTH MP David Davies is inviting local schools to take part in a nationwide competition to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Big Ben.

The Clock Tower, the Great Clock and the Great Bell, to which the nickname 'Big Ben' was originally given, are 150 years-old in 2009.

To help get the anniversary celebrations started, a Christmas card design competition has been launched for schools. The theme is "Parliament and Big Ben" and prizes included climbing to the top of the Clock Tower, meeting the Keeper of the Great Clock, and touring the House of Commons.

"Many believe the Great Bell was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, the wife of Lady Llanover and former MP for Monmouth," said Mr Davies.

"He was the First Commissioner for Works 1855-1858 and his name is inscribed on the bell, so it would be fantastic if the winning design came from the constituency."

Mr Davies has sent an information pack and official entry form to every school in his constituency, inviting them to get involved.

"There is an abundance of artistic talent amongst our youngsters and this is a fantastic opportunity to get the creative juices flowing," he said.

"I look forward to receiving some wonderful and imaginative entries and I wish everyone the best of luck."

The deadline for entries is 28th February 2009. For further details, contact the constituency office on 01291 672817 or email [email protected]">[email protected]
