Goytre - 1

Newport Civil Service - 3

GOYTRE chairman, Paul Greenhalgh, says his team were left ruing missed opportunities which should have seen his side progress into the next round of the FAW Cup.

The Welsh League Division Three side had numerous chances and even hit the wood work on occasions but failed to capitalise on their pressure by only converting one of their chances.

In contrast Newport Civil Service only had four chances in the entire match but were far more clinical in front of goal scoring three times.

"We started well even though we had a few players out and we were on top for most of the first half as we applied all the pressure for the first 15 minutes," said Greenhalgh.

"Captain Craig Joliffe was pulling all the strings in central midfield and he combined well with Phil Melville to set up the goal.

"Joliffe received the ball from Melville just outside the box and smashed it into the top corner from 20 yards out.

"We should have scored another goal when centre forward Andy Walsh took the ball down the wing and crossed it into the box.

"Lee Waddon got a head to the ball and flicked it on to Lee Grimes but from three yards out he somehow failed to put the ball into the back of the net and the Civil keeper smothered the shot.

"We went on to dominate and had another opportunity when a pass to Joliffe split the opposition defence.

"The second half started disastrously when a Civil corner resulted in their centre forward Neil Bailey putting in a strong downward header which keeper Gareth Williams had no chance to stop.

"Worst was to come when Civil put in a speculative cross and Lee Waddon tried to clear with a diving header only for the ball to go into our net.

"Civil confidence grew and with the poor conditions and the pitch cutting up they did well to almost increase their lead with a Ben Burrow shot but Gareth Williams produced a great save to tip it onto the post which we cleared from.

"We got back into the game with 20 minutes to go and substitute Adam Roberts and Andy Walsh combined to set up centre forward Mark Jones who curled his shot over the keeper only the ball just didn't dip enough and went over the bar.

"Civil were content to hold on to their lead and our next chance fell to Phil Melville who's volley hit the post and it proved to be our last chance.

"The Civil goal came out of nothing when a long ball was cleared for a corner when there wasn't any danger.

"The corner wasn't cleared and after a goal mouth scramble Civil scored their third goal."

It was a disappointing end to a game that Goytre could and should have won.

Chairman Phil is now looking to their next game in division three and hopes Goytre will learn from their mistakes.

"We had more than enough chances to win the game and we've got to learn to take these opportunities," he continued.

"I think we are going to have to look at our set piece as well as two of the goals we conceded came from set pieces.

"To be fair to our coach and manager they worked on set pieces last week but it's obviously something we will have to look at again."

Goytre are playing AFC Llwydcoed at home at 2.30.
