FOUR mini tennis players from Abergavenny tennis club qualified for the end of season masters finals on the tennis Wales mini red and green circuits this winter.
The events were only open to players ranked in the top 16 in South Wales and the Abergavenny youngsters secured their places after some intense competition throughout the region.
In the Green (U10) finals held at Newport Tennis Centre, James Morris and Dan Taylor found themselves drawn against each other in the opening round, with Morris coming through narrowly before progressing all the way to the final after an impressive win in the semi-final against Sam Thomas of Fishguard.
In the final against Lewys Thomas (brother of Sam), Morris ran out of steam but will be delighted at finishing the season fearing no player in the county.
Not to be outdone, Dan Taylor stormed through to win the consolation event, securing Abergavenny's status amongst the top mini green clubs in South Wales.
The Red (U8) finals were held indoors at David Lloyd Cardiff with a round robin system used to determine the opening round.
Oliver Stansfield won his box convincingly and after a touch draw, Elliot Simmonds finished third.
In the deciding round Simmonds faced other players who had finished third in their boxes, and with two wins out of three he finished the event in a creditable eighth place.
Facing the top players from regional performance centres, Stansfield dug out his best tennis to win two out of his three matches, finishing as runner-up for the event and only missing out on the top place by one point.
Abergavenny Head Coach Robert Wedlake was delighted with the performances from the boys, who are all on the advanced tennis programme at the club.
