The Mayor of Abergavenny’s Charity Concert took place on a wet Welsh night before an appreciative audience.

Abergavenny Borough Band was joined by the choir of Llanfoist Primary Schools and pupils from King Henry VIII School.

The programme of music ranged from Tchaikovsky to traditional Welsh melodies and music from the theatre and shows.

The band’s music also featured a stunning rendition of Misty from flugelhorn horn soloist, Zoe Alexander.

Local children were very much centre of stage on the evening. There were smiles all round as the choir and soloists from Llanfoist Primary School charmed the audience by performing six energetic numbers with music from their Christmas pantomime and a wonderful rendition of Consider Yourself from Oliver.

Ben Baker and Millie Francis from King Henry VIII School provided accomplished performances with music from Les Miserables and Joseph.

On the same night two of their fellow students were taking part in the second round of the Rotary Young Musician of the Year.

The Mayor of Abergavenny’s charities include The Welsh Air Ambulance Service, providing emergency air cover for those facing life threatening injuries and illness. The charity relies entirely on donations to raise £6 million a year to operate its three helicopters in Mid, North and South Wales and also a children’s Air Ambulance.

The Mayor’s second charity, Velindre Cancer Centre, will also benefit from the concert providing much-needed funds. The centre is the largest non-surgical cancer hospital in Wales providing radiotherapy, chemotherapy and other specialist treatments. The Velindre Cancer charity supports many patients and their families through difficult times.

Mayor of Abergavenny Councillor Maureen Powell thanked the audience for supporting the charities with the evening set to raise over £1,000.

The concert ended with a rousing rendition of The Floral Dance in remembrance of the recently departed Sir Terry Wogan.

The fact that it was a rainy night didn’t seem to matter; the concert brought a little sunshine to everyone!
