CONCERNS have been raised regarding the safety of a busy rural road following a fatal accident last week.

A 60-year-old man died after being hit by a Land Rover Discovery at 5.50pm on Friday, January 7 on the B4246 road between the junction of Blaenavon Road and Govilon.

The man was taken to Nevill Hall Hospital were his was later pronounced dead.

Llanwenarth Ultra county councillor Christine Walby said, "I do not known the circumstances surrounding the accident and I am shocked and saddened by it.

"There have been a lot of concerns raised about this stretch of road and Blaenavon Road.

"The issues, which extend beyond the lack of lighting on the road, I have taken up over the past year as did my predecessor Verona Nelmes. I have expressed concerns about the junction and the dangers around that area.

"Gwent Police have done some speed testing along the road so perhaps the speed limit should be extended."

Monmouthshire County Council Traffic Network Manager, Paul Keeble said, Monmouthshire County Council was very saddened to hear about the recent fatality near Govilon and sends condolences to the family of the deceased pedestrian.

"Both Gwent Police and the council study details of the accidents report prepared following the incident and consider making improvements where appropriate.

"Although the incident would not seem to be related to visibility issues at Merthyr Road and Blaenavon Road junction the council is currently in negotiations with an adjacent land owner to acquire land which will allow improvements to be made to the visibility at this location.

"MCC, in line with most other highway authorities, does not generally provide street lighting on rural roads, preferring other road safety measure such as advance signing and road markings to highlight busy junctions."

Gwent Police ask that any witness to the incident please contact the Serious Road Collision Unit at Police Headquarters, Tel: 01633 83811.

A public exhibition to review the current traffic calming measures in place on the B4246 Merthyr Road in Llanfoist will take place on Tuesday, January 18 between 2pm and 7pm at Llanfoist Village Hall.

There will be a ten minute presentation at 3.30pm and 6pm, and will be an ideal opportunity for all those with concerns over the current traffic calming measures to go along and discuss the possible alternative schemes.
