Four people from the Abergavenny area have been honoured at this year’s National Eisteddfod held at Bodedern in Anglesey.

David and Ruth Roberts of Llanellen, Jeanette Massocchi of Treadam near Llantilio Crossenny and Jeremy Randles of Holywell Crescent were all inducted into the Gorsedd of Bards for their services to the Welsh language and culture in Abergavenny and especially for their outstanding contributions to last year’s National Eisteddfod held at Abergavenny.

David and Ruth Roberts jointly chaired the Abergavenny Appeal Committee which succeeded in raising over £120,000 towards the county target of £300,000.

They are also active in running the successful local Welsh society, Cymdeithas Cymreigyddion y Fenni.

Jeanette Massocchi has contributed to the musical excellence engendered by the Eisteddfod for many years.

Last year, she came out of retirement to accompany and train the Eisteddfod choir and to act as an adjudicator and accompanist throughout the Eisteddfod.

Jeremy Randles was instrumental in ensuring that the National Eisteddfod came to Abergavenny, was chairman of the technical committee that oversaw the construction of the Eisteddfod Maes and acted as head steward for the week of the festival.

Unfortunately, Jeremy was not able to attend the induction ceremony due to a family bereavement.

This year’s newly enrobed bards join four other local people honoured at the 2016 Abergavenny National Eisteddfod – Robin Davies of Monmouth, Rhiannon Davies and the late Ceri Thomas from Abergavenny and Eirwen Williams of Clydach.
