A Crickhowell fundraising group has reached its huge milestone of £100,000 in aid of cancer research.
Members from the Crickhowell Cancer Research Committee have worked with businesses and heartfelt volunteers from across the town to raise the huge sum for those suffering with the disease.
The group, chaired by Mrs. Hazel Thomas, has held numerous events over the years, and has now hit the six-figure milestone few grassroots charity groups ever manage.
A number of volunteers helped raise the substantial figure. Ian Bayliss, of Gilwern, raised £1294 after swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles, and then running a full marathon during Ironman Wales in Tenby, late last summer.
A golfing tournament at Monmouthshire Golf Club proved to be a great success with over 130 golfers taking part. Captain Steven Parry raised £5,000 during a single day.
The volunteers also drummed up another £1,000 after selling out a talk held by Dame Shaw Legge-Burke during Afternoon Tea at the Golf Club.
Hazel Thomas (Chairman) thanked the Hindmarsh family at The Bear Hotel for sponsoring the band for a very enjoyable Charity Ball that took place at the Manor Hotel raising £2,600 during the evening.
Anne Smith, a young Soprano was invited to perform at an Afternoon Tea at the Dragon Hotel along with harpist Jill Madely. Both entertained with a medley of Welsh and English music which was very well received by all present, said Mrs. Thomas, of the event which collected another £1227.45.
The Committee held an Owen Mary Event which proved to be very popular with people coming from across South Wales and raised £1657.33 for the cancer charity in Velindre.
Another successful raffle took place in the summer in Crickhowell raising £1,200, whilst many donations were received in memory of loved ones totaling £1,620.
Donations have also been received from Llangattock Bridge Club, European Heritage, and Crickhowell Bridge Club totalling £1,650.
The Committee wishes to thank all the people who have sponsored and attended events, and made donations during this period enabling them to send this large amount of money to Cancer Research Wales in Velindre Hospital.
