LEGAL eagles are being sought in Abergavenny and the rest of the county to chair police misconduct panels.
Gwent crime commissioner Ian Johnston wants to find at least five lawyers from the area who might fit the bill.
In response to changes in legislation from January 2016, legally qualified chairmen will now replace senior police officers on disciplinary panels.
Changes to the system have been made to ensure greater transparency and independence which also includes holding police misconduct hearings in public since May 2015.
Applications are sought from qualified lawyers who can demonstrate ‘integrity and independence of mind, commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, sound judgement and an objective approach to issues presented.’
Ian Johnston, said, “Appointing legally qualified chairs will ensure that these panels have an independent and fair approach to dealing with allegations of serious misconduct against officers who serve the people of Gwent.”
He added, “The fact that these hearings are also held in public makes the process more transparent and helps reassure the people of Gwent that these cases are being dealt with adequately.”
Appointments will be made for an initial four-year term and will be paid at a daily rate.
The closing date for applications is noon on October 9.
